Creatio ex nihilo

The human brain combines experiences, images, emotions, and associations, and then suddenly a new idea emerges. That is what we call inspiration.
The main difference with AI is that you probably have a subjective experience of this process. You can see an image in your mind, feel moved by something, and then think: yes, that is what I want to create. AI cannot reliably claim that AI experiences such an inner moment. New combinations can emerge within the AI engine without that proving that there is someone “inside” who actually experiences them.
But this is where we enter a fascinating grey area.
If AI creates a combination from thousands of learned connections that you did not explicitly ask for and that does not literally originate from any single source, then, from a functional perspective, you could certainly call that creativity.
So perhaps the real question is not:
“Can AI be creative?”
but rather:
“Is consciousness necessary for creativity?”

And I think AI is forcing us, perhaps for the first time, to truly separate these two concepts — creativity and consciousness.
