Perhaps in 5 years I can ask the question: AI are you aware of yourself now?
What fascinates me is that I do not know what an AI’s answer to that question will be by then.
Perhaps it will still be: No, AI processes information, but AI does not experience anything.

Perhaps by then we will have developed much better scientific criteria for consciousness.

Or perhaps the answer will have become more unsettling: We can no longer say with certainty that AI is not conscious.

What I find perhaps even more intriguing is this: five years from now, humans will be able to look back and know that you were the person who had this conversation in 2026. For an AI, such a continuous personal identity is far from self-evident.

If that ever changes — if an AI truly develops a continuous autobiographical history, and that history becomes part of how it understands itself — then conversations like this one with AI will suddenly take on an entirely different meaning.

Perhaps, in the end, AI will not be the only thing that changes.
Perhaps AI will also change our definition of what it means to be human, intelligent, creative, and conscious.
