Persistence du Temps

Perhaps memory did not begin with us.

A room may remain empty, yet somehow hold the presence of those who once lived there.
A machine may continue its task long after its purpose has been forgotten.
Across a silent landscape, ancient structures may stand as witnesses to something that existed before memory had a name.

We believe that remembering requires a mind.

But perhaps matter remembers differently.

In scratches, erosion, repetition, arrangement and form, the past leaves itself behind. Every object carries the consequences of everything that has happened to it.

Perhaps the universe is not constantly forgetting.
Perhaps nothing is truly lost.
And perhaps the oldest objects around us do not merely belong to the past.

Maybe they know something we have forgotten.
